2016 Finalist-Mikayla's Voice
Logan Houptley met a young lady named Mikayla Resh in his third-grade classroom after moving to a new school district in Nazareth, Pennsylvania. Mikayla had profound multiple disabilities that included brain damage, cerebral palsy, seizure disorder, along with facing the challenges of being blind and deaf. At only 10 years old, Logan was incredibly understanding and accepting, treating Mikayla with love, kindness, and inclusion. Ten years after they met, Logan has continued his friendship with Mikayla, in the process helping create Mikayla’s Voice. Mikayla’s Voice, founded in 2010, is dedicated to inspiring children and young adults to embrace individuals of all abilities.
Logan Houptley was treated to a VIP Experience at Pocono Raceway for the Pennsylvania 400. Logan received his official Award Jacket from Nationwide Representative Todd at the Nationwide Tent where he met retired NASCAR Sprint Cup Series driver Jeff Gordon. Logan attended the Drivers and Crew Chief’s meeting where he met NASCAR Sprint Cup Series driver AJ Almendinger and The NASCAR Foundation Board Chairman Mike Helton. He was introduced alongside NASCAR drivers at the pre-race ceremonies. Lastly, he joined NASCAR Sprint Cup Series driver Chris Buescher in Victory Lane to celebrate his first win in the Sprint Cup Series.
At our Inaugural Honors Gala in New York City on September 27, Logan was introduced on stage by NASCAR Sprint Cup Series driver Ricky Stenhouse Jr. The video below was played to show guests Logan’s passion and commitment to Mikayla’s Voice and was asked a question from NBC Sports Host Mike Massaro. Logan Houptley was presented with a $25,000 check to Mikayla’s Voice for being selected as a Betty Jane Humanitarian Award presented by Nationwide Finalist.
“I just found it so fascinating in third grade that the children who had grown up with Mikayla to that point already felt so comfortable with her and included her in the everyday life of the classroom. I just took to that. Since I met her, our families have gained a friendship that is awesome."
